How To Choose The Best Place To Stay For Your Bali Holiday
Bali travel is easy and Bali has become a great holiday destination for singles, couples and families. Let’s explore the many different locations to stay on the island.
Kuta, a former Balinese fishing village, is Bali’s premier and busiest tourist beach resort town providing accommodation of all types, western food, great shopping, surf, sunsets and nightlife. Kuta often refers to the entire beach area of the three separate villages Kuta, Legian and Tuban as there is no distinguishable difference being one stretch of beach. Foreign surfers and backpackers first visited Kuta over 40 years ago for its great surf beach and remote, relaxed lifestyle. This is the most popular and the busiest place on the island. Many visitors are attracted by the excitement of this unique and dynamic area where East meets West. It is the main entertainment place for tourists with its famous nightlife. There are many restaurants, cafes, bars and shops in the area. Kuta has plenty of inexpensive, quality Bali accommodation for all budgets.
Although you won’t be able to distinguish them, Legian Beach stretches north from Kuta Beach. Once you pass Jalan Melasti you enter into Legian. A former rice paddy area, Legian is now a bustling tourist area. Although not as congested as Kuta, Legian is a commercial tourist area with busy restaurants, markets, bars, food stalls and endless shops. The hotels, which are mainly small to medium sized properties that are locally owned and managed, are usually newer and slightly more expensive than Kuta properties.
Continuing northwards is Seminyak adjacent to Legian. This area is the new Kuta with the latest hotel developments hosting what is regarded as the best restaurant and nightlife scene in Bali. This is the place to go after you’re done it all in Kuta. The Seminyak area is less densely populated than Kuta and provides a sense of tranquility with its vast expanse of sand and open rice paddies.
With land suitable for development in Kuta running out, South Kuta (formerly Tuban) has developed as a tourist area and is now the home to several well known international hotels – including Ramada. South Kuta is located just south of Kuta and north of the Airport. It was developed after central Kuta and provides a variety of accommodation including large resort-style beach front Bali hotels. Also located in South Kuta Beach is Waterbom Park an international standard water park with water slides, pools and tropical gardens. As a result the area is popular with families.
Jimbaran, just south of the airport, is located on a beautiful bay on Bali’s west coast. The bay is a sparkling crescent of white sand with a great selection of seafood restaurants scattered along the beachfront. Many exclusive five star Bali hotels such as Intercontinental Bali, Four Seasons and Ritz Carlton are located here and as a result the accommodation is generally more expensive than other areas of Bali. The lower level of commercialisation makes the area attractive for a peaceful and relaxing holiday in luxury surroundings.
Built on land not useful for farming, the Indonesian Government initiated the Nusa Dua project to build resort hotels to have a place where tourists could stay and leave Bali to the Balinese. Nusa Dua is located 10 km southeast of the Airport and is an enclave of modern, beach resorts. There are many international 5 star Bali hotels in Nusa Dua complete with an 18 hole international golf course and large international style shopping complex.
Tanjung Benoa is a small peninsula jutting north along Bali’s eastern coast just north of Nusa Dua where several exclusive hotel resorts have been constructed following the success of Nusa Dua. The area is popular for water sports
Sanur is located on the opposite side of the peninsular from Kuta and has a relaxed cosmopolitan atmosphere that offers inexpensive quality restaurants, a broad selection of shops that include arts and crafts, homewares and clothing, and a large variety of tourist services. Sanur was Bali’s first beach resort and the landing site of Dutch forces in 1904 to begin their “conquest” of Bali.
The area has some active nightlife but is less touristy than Kuta offering true Balinese character. The beach has a narrow stretch of beautiful white sand and is a calm lagoon protected from the surf by a stunning coral reef. Sanur has a wide selection of hotel accommodation
Ubud is situated in the hills 20 kms to the north of Denpassar, Bali’s capital. Ubud’s hotels and resorts cater to those who prefer spas and cultural pursuits over surfing and nightlife. There is a wide range of hotel accommodation from the most expensive hotel in Bali to budget Bali hotels. Ubud is well known for its arts and crafts, museums and great restaurants.
