Don’t Forget Old Mission Peninsula Michigan
Many vacationers find themselves traveling to Grand Traverse County every year. They may be visiting for the National Cherry Festival, the amazing golf courses, or just to visit historic downtown Traverse City. If you find yourself traveling to the Grand Traverse Region this summer you don’t want to miss out on the wonders of the Old Mission Peninsula. The views are amazing and there is a lot of things to do for a short day trip.
Old Mission Peninsula is a well kept secret that is only a fifteen to twenty minute drive north of downtown Traverse City. It is a great place to visit and get away from the large crowds of tourists walking the beaches of West and East Grand Traverse Bay. There are many attractions from vineyards, wine tasting, hiking and some of the best restaurants in the area. Below are some great attractions for your trip to Old Mission Peninsula.
* The old light house at the end of the peninsula is a must see for visitors. Not only is there a great swimming beach right next to the light house, but for those who enjoy hiking there are a number of well marked travels. You will also want to check out the 1858 Hessler Log Home.
* 1800s style Old Mission General Store has a lot to offer. My favorite is the aged cheddar cheese, which is to die for. You will be able to pick up anything you need for your picnic on the beach.
* There are a number of wineries on the peninsula that allow tours and wine tasting. Because they are located on the globes 45th parallel they are in an ideal climate for growing many different kinds of grapes. The Chateau Chantal is my favorite of all the wineries, with views of both East and West Bay.
* Bowers Harbor Inn was once the estate of the late Charles F. Stickney. Located on West Bay it has one of the finest Restaurants in the area. There is fine dining at the Mission Table or you can enjoy a causal lunch inside the Jolly Pumpkin. The food is prepared with ingredients coming directly from the local farms and wineries.
This is only a short list of the many attractions that will await you on your visit to Old Mission Peninsula. If you find yourself wanting more just ask the locals, they’ll be sure to help you. Take the trip up the Peninsula and I promise you won’t be disappointed.
