Colorado Conventin Center Hosts Utilimetrics
Conventions make good work for SamTlecani, the owner and chief driver of Pyramids Limo, a Denver Limousine , Denver Airport Transportation and Boulder Limo Company, and Tuesday was no exception. The Colorado Convention Center, just across from the Hyatt Regency, is playing host, this week, to the Utilimetrics Trade Show. Never heard of Utilimetrics? Well, here’s your chance. Lets break the word down.
The two syllables in Utilimetrics mean metrics for utilities. If you think that doesn’t make for an exciting convention, then guess again. Utility measurements are more than the little meter in the home which constantly calculates how much money we will be owing to the Gas and Electric Company. But, when you hear about the latest changes in utility measuring, you might not be so thrilled.
The utility companies are like everyone else, they want to be in on the market. Some time ago, they figured out that there were certain times of the day when the demand for utilities, such as electricity, was much greater. And there were certain times of the day, when regardless of the demand, the utility company could not produce as much of the commodity, be it water, or electricity or gas. So the industry innovators asked themselves, why we shouldn’t we charge more when the combination of higher demand and or lower production, is raising the demand with respect to the supply. In other words, why shouldn’t our utility be like every other business that raises prices, when the demand exceeds the supply? So with that, new smart meters were developed, and now gas companies can charge different prices for units of commodity depending on the fluctuations in the market during the day.
Don’t get me wrong, these new smart meters are not only about utility companies making an extra buck. Using data constantly supplied by the smart meters, the utility companies can potentially protect cities from outages and other negative events by telling their scientists more about minute to minute fluctuations in commodity use.
Smart meter aside, for Sam, this was another convention fare. The customers asked to be picked up at the airport at 2 pm. They had just flown in from Japan for the trade show. Sam met them at the Denver International Airport in his Lincoln Town Car, and within a few minutes had them safely delivered to the Hyatt Regency Hotel. Luckily for the passengers, Sam wasn’t using a smart meter. With the convention season under way, there was plenty of demand for limousine pickups at the airport. With more demand than supply, Sam could have raised his price!
