Amsterdam: Red Light District And More
Over the years Amsterdam has become synonymous with liberal attitudes – whether it’s in the form of naked chicks in the red light district, their forward thinking towards homosexual culture or their relaxed laws regarding marijuana. Because of some of these, many parents feel uncomfortable taking their children to the city. That, however, isn’t necessary as the Dutch capital offers much for all tastes and ages.
Because of its flat terrain Amsterdam is a wonderful city to cycle through. Many of the locals use this mode of transportation on a daily basis as it’s cheaper and more practical than to drive or use public transport. On sunny summer days it’s also a wonderful way to get out and feel a fresh breeze in the radiant sunshine. Amsterdam also has many canals that can be used for transportation means, but for the normal visitor this will normally be done as part of a guided tour.

Art lovers will be keen to see all the museums in town. There are three world class museums all within touching distance of one another in the Museum Quarter – the Van Gogh Museum, the Stedelijk Museum of Modern Art and the Rijksmuesum.
Art is a predominant factor in all of these venues. The Rijksmuseum houses work by Rembrandt, Steen, van Ruisdael and that ilk. The nearby Van Gogh Museum has the biggest collection of art created by the man equally as famous for his substandard number of ears.
If the Rijksmuseum doesn’t have enough Rembrandt for your liking, the Dutch city also has the Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn house on display. As one of Europe’s greatest known painters, this house gets many visitors each year as people look to find out more about his life and his work. The house contains a collection of more than 250 pieces of original Rembrandt work.
Another famous house in Amsterdam is the one that Anne Frank hid in during the Second World War. Opened to the public in the 60s, the house is still in the condition it was in when the young Jew kept her diary while hiding in the family attic. Frank’s house – also known as the Achterhuise – shows the hiding place and conditions that the young girl experienced.
Of course, it’s not all history and art in Amsterdam. The city is one of the most visited by stag parties, keen to enjoy the locally brewed beers, coffee houses and the hot naked chicks in the red light district. This district centres around Zeedijk Street and as well as brothels and strip shows offers many bars and restaurants to the curious – but not committed – members of the party.
